Abstract
796,002. Pneumatic tyres. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. July 27, 1956 [Oct. 27, 1955], No. 23254/56. Class 144 (2). A detachable sidewall 10 to be applied to a pneumatic tyre 16 mounted on a wheel rim 13 is of coloured resilient material in the form of an annular body 17 moulded to conform with the contour of the tyre side 19 and has a radial inner peripheral skirt 20 to be clamped between the tyre bead 15 and the rim flange 14, the skirt 20 having a series of circumferentially spaced holes or recesses 21 along its medial line to permit bulging of the tyre bead surface thereinto, Fig. 2, to enhance the anchorage of the detachable sidewall against the action of centrifugal force. As shown, the skirt 20 is thinner than the body 17 and the holes 21 have a radial width of about one-third that of the skirt 20. The angular spacing of the holes may be from 10 to 30 degrees and where blind holes 21, Fig. 6, are used they extend from the bead-engaging face of the skirt to a depth of at least 20 per cent of the skirt thickness.
