Abstract
Vaporizable organic ingredients or impurities are separated from mixtures with non-volatile vinylidene polymers without contaminating the polymer with dark-coloured products, by heating at less than 270 DEG C. in a vessel in which the portions that are contacted with the vapours are composed of or coated with aluminium or a metal composition containing aluminium as the principal ingredient and free of metals higher than magnesium in the electromotive series. A suitable devolatilizer comprises a jacketed kettle 1, with a valved inlet 3 for the polymer composition leading to a perforated cup 4, which permits the composition to fall as thin streams. An optional valved inlet 8 for inert gas, a valved vapour outlet 11 leading to a pump, and a bottom outlet 14 for the molten polymer leading to an extruder are also fitted. Thermoplastic vinyl aromatic resins, e.g. polystyrene, polyvinyl toluene polymers of ar-chlorostyrene, <PICT:0795999/III/1> polyethylene and copolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile and styrene with butadiene may be heated.ALSO:<PICT:0795999/IV (a)/1> Vaporizable organic ingredients or impurities are separated from mixtures with non-volatile vinylidene polymers without contaminating the polymer with dark-coloured products by heating at less than 270 DEG C. in a vessel in which portions that are contacted with the vapours are composed of or coated with aluminium or a metal composition containing aluminium as the principal ingredient and free of metals higher than magnesium in the electromotive series. Vinyl aromatic resins, e.g. polystyrene, polyvinyl toluene, polymers of ar-chlorostyrene, polyethylene and copolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile and styrene with butadiene may be treated. A suitable devolatilizer is described (see Group III).
