Abstract

<PICT:0701236/IV (a)/1> In a process for the continuous polymerization of olefinic compounds containing at least 75 per cent. by weight of a monovinyl aromatic compound, the liquid monomers are fed into the top of a tower filled with the reacting mass which is caused to flow downward through a zone at a temperature of 85 DEG to 130 DEG C. until it contains at least 25 per cent. by weight of polymer, while stirring by agitator blades at a speed less than is required to produce turbulence, but so as to cause the mass to flow through the tower as a body wherein the amount of polymer is progressively increased as it passes through successive polymerization zones. The heat plastified mass containing at least 40 per cent. by weight of the polymer is removed at the lower outlet. Styrene, o-, m- and p-methyl styrenes, m- and p-ethyl styrenes, p-isopropyl styrene, o- and p-chlorostyrenes, o- and p-dimethyl styrenes and o-methyl p-isopropyl styrene are examples of the monovinyl aromatic compounds and vinyl chloride, a - methyl styrene, ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate may be the copolymerizable compounds. Suitable apparatus comprises a jacketed, sectional polymerization vessel 3a, 3b, 3c having a lower conical section 4 with valved outlet 5. Each section has horizontal banks of tubes 10 at right angles to each other for a heating or cooling fluid and an agitator with blades 14 on a driven shaft 15. In an example styrene is continuously polymerized in bulk at a temperature in the first zone of 85-130 DEG C. until at least 25 per cent. is polymerized, in a middle zone of 135-150 DEG C. and in a lower zone at 180 to 240 DEG C. to give a final product of 97 per cent. polymer, the rate of feed of monomer being adjusted to correspond to the amount of polymer withdrawn. Alternatively, a solution of styrene in an inert aromatic solvent, e.g. ethyl benzene, ethyl toluene, diethyl benzene or isopropyl benzene, may be used at temperatures between 100 and 150 DEG C. A series of towers may be used and the product purified by vacuum distillation.
