Abstract
795,868. Laminates;. coated webs of regenerated cellulose. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd. March 14, 1956 [March 29, 1955], No. 9133/55. Class 140. Moisture-proof sheet wrapping material is made by coating a regenerated cellulose base film with a thin continuous layer of vinylidene chloride polymer or copolymer and applying to this a coating of a normally solid polyethylene. The latter coating may be applied by dipping the film in an organic solvent (e.g. ochlorobenzene or xylene) solution or an aqueous dispersion of polyethylene and subsequently doctoring and drying the coating or a hot layer of polyethylene may be extruded on to the coated film and the two passed through heated rollers. The coatings may be applied to one or both sides of the film. Polyvinylidene chloride or a copolymer of vinylidene chloride with one of a mixture of two or more of the following: acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile ; methyl, ethyl, butyl or isobutyl acrylate; methyl, ethyl, butyl or isobutyl methacrylate; vinyl chloride or vinyl acetate may be used and itaconic acid or anhydride, citraconic acid or anhydride and mesaconic acid may also be included. To enhance anchoring of the vinylidene coating to it the cellulose film may be first impregnated with for example malamine or urea formaldehyde resin or polyethyleneimine. Wetting agents and slip agents such as are described in Specifications 655,006, 714,275, 731,630 and 766,708 may be added to the vinylidene copolymers. Commercial polyethylene may be used and may be modified with for example raw rubber, polyisobutylene, paraffin wax, gum dammar, polyvinyl acetate, a dye, a pigment, a mineral filler or a substance which eliminates the accumulation of electrostatic charges such as glyceryl monostearate or a polyethylene glycol monolaurate having 6 to 10 ethylene glycol units in the molecule. Polyethylene having a number average molecular weight of between 14,000 and 44,000 and a softening point of at least 100 C. is preferred.
