Apparatus in which gases are contacted with liquids, e.g. an air cleaner in which dust-laden air is contacted with oil, comprises a housing having spaced walls 11 and 12, two filter pads of crimped wire 13 and 14, an apertured plate 20 on to which a controlled amount of liquid is fed through a central pipe 22 and means to pass the gas upwardly through the apertures of the plate at a velocity suflicient to entrain liquid accumulating about the edges of the aperture, entrained liquid being separated by the pads 13 and 14 and draining by a pipe 18 to a tank 19. The apertures 21 may be formed by punching holes in a plate leaving upwardly bent tabs 27 for each hole attached to the plate. The size of the apertures may be from # to 1<SP>1</SP>/ 2 inches and may, e.g. be # inch holes on ¥ inch centres, such a plate would require a minimum gas velocity of 725 feet per minute. In a modification the apertures in the plate 20 are provided with flapper valves hinged to the plate. Alternatively, the plate may be of thin flexible material, e.g. rubber, plastic or thin metal, and cut to provide triangular or square flaps. An apparatus may comprise a number of apertured plates, each having flapper valves adapted to open at a different pressure and thereby progressively increase the operative capacity of the apparatus as the load on the apparatus increases.
