An extensible endless-belt conveyer 11, Fig. 1, for use in mining operations is supported by a long ribbon 16 of stainless steel, aluminium or other material of high tensile strength which can be unwound from a spool 12 and maintained in tension. The ribbon 16 is supported by troughed idler rollers 29 arranged between pairs of jacks 28 and its free end is secured to the end section 17, Fig. 2, of the system by a clamp 21. The section 17 may have troughed idler rollers for supporting the belt or a troughed metal sheet may be provided for this purpose. The section 17 is moved by connecting any hauling device, e.g. a self-propelled machine, or a winch, to a draw-bar 27 after the conveyer belt has been broken at an existing splice. The end sections may be mounted on wheels, or endless tracks, and may have means for anchoring them to the ceiling and floor of the mine working. Each run of the conveyer may be supported by a ribbon of stainless steel. Pawl-and-ratchet mechanism may be provided to prevent rotation of the spool 12 in unwinding direction during operation of the conveyer. In the construction shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the lower ribbon 105 is wider than the upper one 103 and supports it. The two ribbons are secured at their edges by clamps 113. The end of each clamp handle 114 may be inserted in a socket 123 formed at the upper end of a supporting pin 121. The pointed ends of the pins are inserted into the floor of the mine and provide positive lateral support for the system. The edges of the ribbons are formed with transverse ridges 110, 111, Fig. 13, separated by longitudinal ridges 112.
