Abstract

795,484. Delivering liquid fuels. MULLER, J. Feb. 8, 1956 [June 9, 1955], No. 3934/56. Class 116 [Also in Group XXVII] A swing-arm for delivering fuel includes ,a telescopic arm 2, 8 (Fig. 1) mounted for universal movement at the upper end of a delivery column 1 and provided with means which hold it in any position to which it is moved. In the construction of Fig. 1 the telescopic arm 2, 8 forms the delivery conduit for the fuel and terminates in a depending pipe 3. The arm 2, 8 is counterbalanced by compression springs 23 connected between brackets 18 on the swinging arm and brackets 19 on a head 4 rotatable at the top of the column 1. The arm 2 is connected to a T-fork 5 (Fig. 2), extending from the head 4, by a pair of pipes 6 which lead to couplings (see Group XXVIII) at the ends of the fork 5 permitting vertical swinging of the arm Each coupling includes a friction lock in which a pair of rollers 47, 48 (Fig. 4) are normally pressed by springs 51, 52 to jam in wedge-shaped recesses 45, 46 formed between a movable ring 44 and a fixed ring 28. Projections 53, 54 from the swing- ing arm serve however to unwedge the rollers 47, 48 provided the force exerted on the swinging arm is sufficient to overcome the spring 51, 52. The outer portion 8 of the swing-arm may be telescoped within or without the inner portion 2 by a connection 59 (Fig. 5) to an endless chain 58 supported by sprockets from the portion 2 of the arm and driven by a crank 60 through an irreversible coupling similar to that illustrated in Fig. 4. Where the portion 8 telescopes over the portion 2 as in Fig. 5 the tail sprocket is carried by a member 56 sliding on the portion 8 and connected by a link 57 to a bracket 55 on the portion 2. The drop-pipe 3 is connected by a rotary joint 10 to an elbow 9 on the swing-arm. Handles 11, 12 assist in manipulating the arm and a valve 13 controlling the flow and biased by a spring 16 is controlled through a link 14 from a handle 15. In an alternative construction (Figs. 6 to 9, not shown) the telescoping swing-arm serves to support a flexible conduit which runs on rollers in the inner portion 2 (Fig. 1) of the swing-arm and passes over an arcuate guide at the head of the outer portion 8 of the arm to depend freely. In this construction a jack operated through an irreversible drive alters the inclination of the swing-arm which is carried by a slewing column. The flexible hose may pass to the swing-arm directly from a drum in the dispensing apparatus and may be guided by a suitable fairlead at the inner end of the swing-arm.
