Abstract

795,233. Laminates. ROMMLER GES, H. Aug. 23, 1954 [Jan. 20, 1954], No. 24461/54. Class 140. [Also in Group XV] A laminate having a smooth surface and consisting of several layers impregnated with thermosetting resin incorporates a layer of material bearing a pattern formed by the threedimensional surface structure of the material, and located beneath a thin sheet impregnated with a thermosetting resin through which the surface structure is visible. The patterned layer may be embossed paper, hand-made paper, watermarked paper in which the thickness of the paper at the watermark differs from that at other portions of the paper, or may be in the form of plaits or strands, e.g. braided or plaited straw or glass fibres. As shown, the laminated assembly to be hot-pressed comprises a number of soda-cellulose paper sheets 11, Fig. 2, impregnated with a phenolic resin, a coloured sulphite cellulose paper sheet 12 impregnated with melamine or urea resin, a sheet 13 of paper containing an ornamental, e.g. herringbone, watermark, and a very thin, transparent paper sheet 15 impregnated with melamine resin. The watermarked sheet 13 may be replaced by a layer consisting of longitudinal and transverse strands 24 and 25, Fig. 3, of glass fibre.
