Abstract

794,945. Electron beam apparatus. FERNSEH GES. July 16, 1956 [July 16, 1955], No. 21887/56. Class 39(1). A television camera comprises a pick-up tube which is surrounded by a shell, the space between tube and shell forming part of a closed air circulatory system and including means for heating said air ; in addition means is also provided for producing a second separate flow of air between the outer wall of the shell and the camera housing. In the drawing, the pick-up tube 2 is enclosed by the shell 5 which forms one chamber of the closed circulatory system. Another chamber is formed as two channels, one containing a heater 8, and the other a fan 6 and motor 7. There is thus no direct heat radiation from heater to tube. The heated air passes from the heater 8 into the shell 5 and around the tube, into the fan chamber and so back to the heater chamber. This closed cycle is dust-free, so that it may circulate between the face-plate 3 of the tube and a variabledensity light filler 11 without causing abrasion or dispersion. A second fan 14 and motor 13 draws air through openings in the camera housing 1, this second air stream passing through a circular passage 10, flowing round the outside of the shell 5 and then round various circuit components 15. The tube 2 is of the imageorthicon type, and requires to be maintained advantageously during operation at about 45‹ to 60‹C. The closed air stream is arranged to be heated rapidly up to the required temperature, after which it is automatically switched over to a lower rate of heating sufficient to maintain the tube at working temperature. This lower rate can be varied. If the camera is switched off for a short time and then on again, the heater is arranged not to revert immediately to full heating, since this may damage the photocathode. Control of the heater to operate as described is provided by the relay circuit of Fig. 2 (not shown). Specification 743,163 [Group XX], is referred to.
