Abstract

794,618. Purification of pyridine. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd. Feb. 13, 1957 [March 7, 1956], No. 7086/56. Class 2 (3). Crude pyridine produced by the vapour-phase reaction between formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and ammonia is purified by a process comprising heating the crude pyridine at an elevated temperature with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, distilling the resulting mixture to remove a distillate containing the impurities present in the crude pyridine and recovering the pyridine from the distillation residue. The pyridine is preferably recovered by azeotropic distillation, for example by cooling the residue, adding a suitable azeotroping agent, which is preferably benzene, refluxing the mixture until the conditions in the distillation column have reached equilibrium and separately collecting the several fractions of distillate obtained on gradually increasing the temperature. The preferred alkali metal hydroxides are sodium and potassium hydroxides.
