794,554. Hydraulic systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 22, 1956 [Oct. 25, 1955], No. 32069/56. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] In an hydraulic system including a plurality of motors, one motor has a control valve which ensures a supply of liquid from a pump to the motor, and the other motor or motors are operable by liquid from an accumulator, the accumulator being chargeable by the pump when the motor is inoperative. As applied to a vehicle power steering system, a steering motor 64 is connected by lines 40, 42 to a control valve 16. In the neutral position of valve spool 18 both motor lines communicate with an exhaust line 44, and a pump 12 supplies liquid through passages 14, 28, 34, 36 to an unloader valve 50 for an accumulator 52. Accumulator 52 supplies a windscreen wiper motor 60 through a control valve 62. Displacement of the valve spool 18 to either side of its neutral position cuts off communication between the pump and the accumulator and opens one of the motor lines to the pump supply. The pressures in the motor lines are communicated through passages 84, 86 in the spool 18 to the ends of the spool so that the resistance sensed at the steering-wheel is proportional to the actual steering resistance.
