Classes 79(2) and 79(5) [Also in Group XXX] A railway track packing machine has means responsive to the carriage movement relative to fixed track elements to control the step-by-step movement of the carriage along the track between successive working positions. The carriage 1 is driven by one set of wheels through a shaft 4 and gearing 5 and is braked on another set of wheels by a brake 8. A packing tool carriage 3 vertically slidable on two columns 40, 41 carries an eccentric shaft 42 which imparts a vibratory movement to the packing tools 43, 44 and a pivotally mounted lever 21 outwardly biased against a stop 24 by a spring 22 and arranged to tilt a bell-crank 19 to depress a piston 18 only when the carriage 3 is moved upwards. A lever 9, mounted on a slide 10 in turn adjustably mounted on a bracket 11 by a screw 12, depresses a piston 14 when engaging a rail fastening or the like on a sleeper 19. The machine operates in the following manner. Starting from a position in which the control levers 31 and 33 are in the positions II<SP>1</SP> and II<SP>11</SP> shown in Fig. 1 and the machine is in the position II the lever 9, as the machine moves forward, engages the rail fastening 34 and depresses the piston 14 to the position I to transmit hydraulic pressure through a flexible conduit 15 and a conduit 16 to a cylinder 26. The piston 27 in the cylinder 26 is moved forwards to displace a lever 33 to a position 1<SP>11</SP> to disengage the clutch 7 and a lever 31 to a position 1<SP>1</SP> to apply the brake 8 so that the machine comes to rest after a braking distance "S" with the packing tools 43, 44 located in the correct position to tamp a sleeper 19. The forward movement of the piston 27 transmits hydraulic pressure through a conduit 25 to a cylinder 17 to move a piston 18 outwards to tilt the bell crank 19. The carriage 3 is now moved downwards to tamp the sleeper 19 but on moving downwards the lever 21 does not move the crank 19. After tamping has been completed the carriage 3 is raised and the lever 21 tilts the crank 19 to depress the piston 18 which causes the piston 27 to move rearwards to disengage the brake 8 and to engage the clutch 7 and thereafter the operation is repeated as described. The brake and clutch controls can also be arranged to respond electromagnetically or photo-electrically to movement of the carriage relative to the fixed track elements.
