[Also in Groups XXXVI and XL (c)] Means for stopping a machine when the tool 10, e.g. a drill, reamer, boring bar, tap, &c., breaks, comprises an inductance-coil L1 encircling the tool and connected to an oscillatory valve-circuit including a relay A controlling a switch for stopping the machine, the presence of the tool in the field of the coil preventing the circuit from oscillating, so that automatic grid-leak-bias is absent and the valve V1 is fully conducting to maintain the relay energized, whilst upon the tool breaking and becoming removed from the field of the coil, the circuit oscillates, a negative-grid-bias is automatically produced, and the resulting decrease in valve-current de-energizes the relay A to stop the machine, and preferably also operates a visible or audible signal or both. The impedance of the coil L1, which may be shrouded from the influence of adjacent metal objects (other than the drill 10), and incorporated in the drill-jig 11, is reduced and the oscillatory voltage developed across it falls as the drill &c., is fed towards the work, until the voltage is insufficient to maintain oscillation and the grid-bias disappears.
