Abstract

A solution of a water-insoluble substance in a water-immiscible organic solvent is emulsified in water using as emulsifying agent a dimethyl-silicon ester of a polyalkylene glycol; the ester has 5 to 95 mol. per cent -(CH3)2SiO- units and 95 to 5 mol. per cent polyalkylene glycol residue units. The water-insoluble substance may be an organosiloxane of unit general formula <FORM:0793501/III/1> where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical and n has an average value of 1 to 3 (see Group IV (a). Other water-insoluble substances referred to are hydrocarbon oils, polyesters, waxes and drying oils. Suitable organic solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene, naphtha, diethyl ether, dibutyl ether, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, chlorobenzene, methylene chloride, and carbon tetrachloride. In examples, emulsifying agents are prepared by reaction of polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol with dimethylsiloxane cyclic tetramer in the presence of toluene and potassium or sodium hydroxide. These agents are used to prepare aqueous emulsions of linseed oil in xylene, carnauba wax in Stoddard solvent, and a liquid resinous siloxane copolymer in xylene.ALSO:A solution of an organosiloxane in a water-immiscible organic solvent is emulsified in water using as emulsifying agent a dimethylsilicon ester of a polyalkylene glycol, which ester has 5 to 95 mol. per cent -(CH3)2SiO- units and 95 to 5 mol. per cent polyalkylene glycol residue units. The organosiloxane has the unit general formula <FORM:0793501/IV (a)/1> , wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical and n has an average value of 1 to 3; R may be methyl, ethyl, butyl, octadecyl, vinyl, allyl, hexenyl, phenyl, naphthyl, xenyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, cyclohexenyl, tolyl, xylyl, benzyl, trichloromethyl, perfluoroethyl, dibromotrichlorophenyl, chlorofluorocyclopentyl, chloromethylphenyl, or iodobenzyl. Suitable organic solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene, naphtha, diethyl ether, dibutyl ether, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, chlorobenzene, methylene chloride, and carbon tetrachloride. The emulsifying agent can be prepared by esterification of a dimethylpolysiloxane with a polyalkylene glycol, by transesterification of alkoxy-dimethylsilanes with a polyalkylene glycol, or by esterification of dimethyldihalosilanes with a polyalkylene glycol. In examples, emulsifying agents are prepared by reaction of polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol with dimethylsiloxane cyclic tetramer in the presence of toluene and sodium or potassium hydroxide. An aqueous emulsion of a liquid resinous siloxane copolymer in xylene is formed, the copolymer comprising monophenylsiloxane, monomethylsiloxane, and diphenylsiloxane.
