Abstract

The invention comprises a process for dehydrohalogenation of dichloropropionic esters containing at least one a -chlorine atom, by treating with salts of metals of the first sub-group to the 8th main group of the Periodic System, in the gas phase. In examples, methyl or butyl a -b -dichloro-propionates are passed over alumina impregnated with barium chloride, activated carbon with cupric chloride, kaolin, montmorillonite and activated carbon with barium chloride, to give methyl or butyl a -chloroacrylate. A list of other metal salts which may be used as catalyst on activated carbon is given, and other esters which may be used (including cycloalkyl and aralkyl esters) are specified. Silicates in the form of other clays are also mentioned, and mixtures thereof and with magnesium oxide. Alpha-alpha-dichloropropionic esters may also be used as starting-material.
