Abstract
A synthetic rubber composition is obtained by coagulating an aqueous mixture containing dispersed particles of a rubber processing oil and a synthetic rubber latex which is an emulsion polymerizate of a major proportion of a butadiene-1,3 hydrocarbon and a minor proportion of a vinyl pyridine which has been emulsion polymerized at a temperature of -40 DEG to +60 DEG F., and the rubber content of which has a ML -4 Mooney viscosity in the range of 75-200, the ratio of processing oil to synthetic rubber in the aqueous mixture being 10-50 parts of processing oil to 100 parts of synthetic rubber solids of the latex, and then drying the coagulum. The processing oil may be a distilled oil fraction or residual oils from petroleum or coal tar, and it may be emulsified in the water by means of anionic, non-ionic or cationic surface-active agents, of which many are specified. Furnace or channel carbon black may be added in the proportion of 25-100 parts of carbon black to 100 parts of synthetic rubber. The polymerizable material may be made from a major proportion of butadiene-1,3, isoprene, piperylene or 2,3-dimethyl butadiene and a minor proportion of 2-methyl-5-vinyl-, 5-ethyl-2-vinyl-, 2-methyl-6-vinyl-, 2-ethyl-4-vinyl-, and 2,4 - dimethyl - 6 - vinyl - pyridine. In examples, an emulsion containing 75 parts of butadiene-1,3, 25 parts of 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine, a potassium salt of disproportionated rosin acid and a tertiary mercaptan modifier was polymerized at 41-44 DEG F. till 60 per cent conversion was obtained and to this was added an oil emulsion of Circosol containing sodium oleate, to this mixture was added carbon black, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur and benzal bis(dimethyl dithiocarbamate) and the whole vulcanized.
