Abstract

Alkylene oxide copolymers are made by reacting two or more alkylene oxides in contact with an alkoxide or compound of the general formula MeR1R11x-1 of a metal of Groups II or III of the Periodic Table as catalyst, where Me is a metal of valency x, R is a hydrocarbon radical and R11x-1 is x - 1 members selected from hydrogen, the halogens, hydrocarbon radicals and alkoxy radicals. Preferred catalysts are aluminium, zinc or magnesium compounds of which many are specified, examples being triethyl aluminium, ethyl aluminium butoxide, ethyl zinc-tertiary-butoxide or aluminium iso-propoxide. Specified alkylene oxides are ethylene oxide, 1,2-propylene oxide, 1,2-butylene oxide, 2,3-butylene oxide, isobutylene oxide, tetramethyl-ethylene oxide, cyclohexene oxide or styrene oxide. In the examples, ethylene oxide and propylene oxide are co-polymerized by heating with: (1) a solution of triethyl aluminium in benzene; (2) a solution of tri-isobutyl aluminium in sym.-dichlorethane; (3) diethyl zinc and hexane; (4) diethyl ether and diethyl zinc; (5) diethyl ether and diethyl magnesium; (6) trioctyl aluminium; (7) zinc diethyl; (8) benzene and diethyl aluminium chloride; (9) benzene and diethyl aluminium tertiary butoxide; (10) a solution of aluminium tertiary-butoxide in benzene; (11) hexane and zinc tertiary butoxide; (12) diethyl ether and magnesium tertiary-butoxide; (13) dichlorethane and aluminium isopropoxide; (14) aluminium isopropoxide. The excess alkylene oxides and solvent (if present) are distilled off and the catalyst removed (several methods are specified). Specifications 785,053 and 785,229 are referred to.
