A tool retainer for a percussive drill comprises a sleeve to receive the shank of a tool, a ball arranged for movement in a radial hole in the sleeve, a locking nut mounted for rotary movement to bring an internal recess therein into alignment with the ball, and resilient means to maintain the locking ring in a set position on the sleeve. As shown, a sleeve 11 has a bore 19 to accommodate a drill shank provided with a recess 22 and a radial hole 16, decreased in diameter at its inner end, in which a ball 14 may move. A locking ring 12 is held in position by a ring 13 on the sleeve and has a recess 23, Fig. 7, on its inner surface which may be brought into alignment with the ball by rotation of the ring 12. A rubber or other resilient member in the form of a cylinder 17 is fitted in a recess 24 in the sleeve, the part outside the recess lying in a slot 25, having end recesses 26-O and 26-L, in the locking ring 12, so that the resilient member acts to resist movement of the ring. The body of the tool may be provided with a mark and the locking ring with the letters " L " and "O" which when brought into alignment with the mark indicate whether the retainer is in the " locked " or " open " position.
