Abstract
792,440. Sealing gaskets. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 31, 1956 [May 31, 1955; May 31, 1955], No. 16863/56. Class 20(3). [Also in Group XIII] A refrigerator gasket comprises a thin flexible cover 14, Fig. 2, enclosing a resilient compressible filler body 15 formed of inorganic filamentary material bonded together by a resinous binder. The body 15 may consist of fibre glass filaments having a diameter of the order of 0.00015 inch bonded together at their points of contact by a thermo-setting phenolic resin. The resilient body has a density of about 1 lb. per cubic foot and requires a sealing pressure of only 1 1b. per linear foot to provide an effective seal. The gasket is secured to the refrigerator cabinet by a plurality of clips 18, 19 which pass through shaping strips 16, 17, the bent over end portions of the cover 14, a backing element 20 and the inturned end portions of the inner and outer walls 6, f respectively. The walls 6, 7 are connected by a series of insulating elements 12. In a modification the gasket cover has a pair of raised portions formed on each edge thereof, which are so shaped that each pair defines a groove therebetween, in which the flanged end portions of the metal strip engage. A plurality of clips extend through the metal strip to attach it. and therefore the gasket, to the refrigerator cabinet. In another form the gasket cover is in the form of a tube the portion which faces the door being thin and outwarly bowed whereas the base portion is a relatively thick self supporting member secured to the cabinet by a plurality of clips. In a further form the gasket cover has its edges brought together and inserted between the inturned edge of the outer sheet metal wall of the cabinet and an inner liner of heat insulating plastic material, the screws which secure the liner to the outer wall also holding this edge of the gasket in position. The opposite end of the base portion of the gasket is provided with a series of clips which enter apertures in the inner liner. In another modification the cover which is in the form of a tube has a thick self supporting bottom surface which is normally spaced slightly away from the cabinet door, this surface having at one edge a ridge which contacts the door and at the other edge a tab over which the hooked portion of a retainer strip is engaged to secure the gasket to the refrigerator door. As shown in Fig. 8, one edge of the cover 102 is secured between the inturned edge of the outer wall 104 of the door and the door liner 106 by means of the screws 105 which secure members 104, 106 together. The opposite edge of cover 102 is formed as a hollow self-supporting protuberance 107 which fits within a recess 108 provided in the door liner 106. In another form Fig. 10, gaskets 225, 226 of simlar form are secured to the cabinet and door respectively, each gasket cover having tabs on each edge which are engaged by the hooked portions of the inner and outer walls 204, 205, 216, 217, of the cabinet and door respectively. The heat insulating strips 211, 219 which are secured such as by screws to the inner and outer walls of the cabinet and door respectively form backings for the filler bodies 228, 234 of the gasket.
