Abstract
792,100. Phonographs. KENT, A.. H. July 7, 1954 [Aug. 7, 1953], No. 19918/54. Class 40 (2). A phonograph for use in a toy or in advertising and which is stated to play in all attitudes including inversion comprises a first biasing spring 65 to provide on the stylus 14 of a sound reproducer unit 15 groove tracking pressure in a lateral direction radially outwardly of a record disc 12 carried by a turn-table 10 rotatably mounted in a frame plate 16, a second biasing spring 59, 60 urging the stylus downwardly towards the record for maintaining contact with the record groove 13 and a resetting mechanism operable by a manual control member. at least at the end of play to pivot the unit upwardly away from the record thereby to allow the first spring 65 to return the unit outwardly to a position where its stylus is. automatically located for re-engagement with the commencement of the groove; actuation of the manual control member initiates an automatic cycle of sound reproduction at the end of which the phonograph automatically stops ready for another cycle or re-actuation of the control member. As shown, the unit 15 is supported via rubber grommets 48 by a resilient A-shaped frame 45 whose apex is welded to a pin 51 pivotable in a bracket 46 in turn pivotable about a pair of spherical bearings 58 located in the plate 16, and the first spring 65 acts torsionally between the bracket 46 and an arm 43 which is also secured to the frame 45 while the end 60 of the second spring 59 both holds the bracket assembly into engagement with it pivoting bearings 58 and produces the downward bias on the stylus 14. Movement of bracket 46 is limited by a recess 90 in the plate 16. The turn-table 10 is driven via a pivotally-biased idler 21 by the shaft 20 of an electric motor 19 supported by brackets 22, 23 and a vibration damping rubber grommet 24 from the plate 16. The motor is supplied from two serially-connected batteries 29 via a switch 41, 42 of which the moving contact 42 is actuated by the leg 43b of the arm 43, whereby the motor is switched off when the stylus reaches the end of the record groove 13. The phonograph remains in this condition until by a,push button or other. manually depressable member outside the phonograph an arm 81 is depressed which in turn depresses an arm 70 on the bracket 46. This lifts the stylus from the record whereupon spring 65 returns the unit 15 until the latter is stopped by engaging the side of the photograph casing 80 which so guides the unit 15 on subsequent release of the push-button that the stylus engages the cornmencement of the groove 13. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 725,755.
