Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil base having a viscosity of 800 to 6,000 S.S.U./210 DEG F. and a minor proportion of a volatile solvent and a copolymer of isobutylene and styrene containing between 40 and 60 per cent wt. of the styrene component. The composition may also contain dimethyl silicone polymers and conventional additives, e.g. phenyl alpha naphthylamine, alkali and alkaline earth petroleum sulphonates, lead oleate, sulphurized fatty oils and colloidal graphite. Suitable mineral oils are asphalts and petroleum residues. The volatile solvent may be trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride or naphtha. In an example, 1 per cent wt. of a 50/50 w./w. isobutylenestyrene copolymer having an intrinsic viscosity between 0.7 and 1.2 is incorporated in a viscous mineral oil and the mixture diluted with 10 per cent wt. of trichlorethylene.
