Abstract

791,819. Packaging. NATIONAL STANDARD CO., Ltd. June 20, 1956 [June 21, 1955], No. 17874/55. Class 94(1). A method of packaging a coil of wire, thread, yarn or like material comprises in one form, Figs. 2-4, stretching a sleeve 3 of thin rubber or other waterproof elastic material over a reel comprising a core 1 and flanges 2, winding the wire &c. 5 on the reel and folding the end portions 7 of the sleeve into overlapping relationship so that the wire &c. is enclosed in an annular envelope. The overlapped portions 7 may be secured together by adhesive and layers of kraft paper 4, 6 may be interposed between the wire &c. and the sleeve 3. The package may be completed by wrapping a further layer 8 of kraft paper around the periphery of the sleeve and securing wooden battens 9 to the flanges 2 as shown in Fig. 5. Alternatively, if the flanges are made of metal, the battens may be forced between them and retained by metal bands, see Fig. 6 (not shown). If the flanges 2 are detachable, they are removed after the sleeve 3 has been applied. Layers 15, Fig. 8, of kraft paper are then wrapped around the periphery of the package and its sides are protected by cardboard discs 16 held in position by bands 17 passing through the core 1.
