A drill bit comprises a shank f to engage a drill rod and cutting inserts c fixed on the edges of helical slots formed in an annular cylindrical head a. The inserts may be triangular in section and may have radial, offset or raked leading faces. One insert may be wider than the other, and eccentric pointed cutters or hard inserts may be carried by a base d, to break up the core. The shank f of the bit is made to B.S.S. 2593/55.
