Abstract

791,313. Automatic voltage control systems. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO.,. Ltd., and MARTIN, R. G. Sept. 29, 1955 [Oct. 26, 1954], No. 30838/54. Class 38 (4). In an automatic voltage stabilizer the error in D.C. output voltage is measured by a transistor oscillator which provides an output varying in amplitude with the voltage to be measured. The output voltage of a rectifier 3 which is supplied from A.C. mains in series with a saturable reactor 5, is compared with a reference voltage tapped at 8 from a source stabilised by a neon tube 12. The resultant is applied to an earthed-base transistor oscillator 14 via an integrating network 2, 24, the capacitor 24 of which is shunted by reversely-poled rectifiers forming a non-linear resistor. The network increases the time constant of the circuit but its effect is reduced by the non-linear resistor 30 when the error signal is large. The network is claimed and described in Specification 791,314. The output of the oscillator 14 is amplified at 25, rectified at 27 and used to control the reactor 5. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a pair of opposed control windings on the reactor are supplied from two similar oscillators which are reversely connected to the voltage to be measured via reversely-poled bias batteries. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), two oscillators of reversed polarity characteristic are used. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the main rectifier and the reference source are connected through resistors in parallel opposition instead of in series.
