Abstract
The Vitamin E biological activity of tocopherol compositions containing a substantial amount of d -tocopherol is enhanced by subjecting the composition to two successive chloromethylation and reduction tocopherol conversion reactions, the second being effected directly on the product of the first. The chloromethylations may be effected with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde and hydrochloric acid, and advantageously the second is carried out under controlled acid conditions of greater intensity than the first, e.g. at an acid normality, in the organic phase, of 0.8-1.0 as against 0.2-0.8 for the first step. Examples describe the application of the process to (1) a concentrate of mixed tocopherols from soya bean oil, and (2) substantially pure d -tocopherol. Specification 639,011 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 751,437.
