Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare β-tocopherol selectively, which is a synthetic intermediate of α-tocopherol having high vitamine E activity, by reacting δ-tocopherol with boric acid to give borate which is condensed with hexamethylene-tetramine and hydrogenated.
CONSTITUTION: δ-Tocopherol is refluxed with boric acid in an organic solvent under heating to give borate, which is reacted with hexamethylenetetramine in the presence of an organic acid catalyst at 105W110°C to prepare a condensation product. This compound is neutralized and hydrogenated in the presence of Ni, Pd, etc., so that it is methylated selectively at 5 position to give β-Tocopherol. β-tocopherol can be converted into α-tocopherol efficiently by reacting β-tocopherol with hexamethylenetetramine, followed by hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst.
