Abstract

791,001. Smoothing direct current. FERGUSON RADIO CORPORATION, Ltd. Feb. 14, 1956 [Feb. 15, 1955]; No. 4548/55. Class 38 (2). A circuit 16 for smoothing the output of a rectifier 13 comprises a transistor 21 of which the collector and emitter electrodes are connected respectively to input and output terminals 17; 22 of the smoothing circuit, the base electrode being connected to the junction point of a resistor 19 and capacitor 20 connected'in series between input terminal 17, and'the other input and output terminals 18, 23. The time constant of charge and discharge of the capacitor exceeds ¢ f where f is the frequency of the supply to be rectified. With the rectifier poled as shown in Fig. 1 a P-N-P transistor is used, but with reverse poling, the transistor is of the N-P-N. type, Fig. 2 (not shown). Smoothing circuit 16 may be preceded by a capacitor in parallel and. an inductor in series, Fig. 3, (not shown). Resistor 19 may be replaced; by an inductor or inductor-resistor combination. Two or more transistors may be connected in parallel, and several smoothing networks may be connected in cascade.
