Abstract
790,892. Vehicle wheels; disc brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. April 4, 1956 [Sept. 8, 1955], No. 10263/56. Classes 103 (1), 144 (1) and 144 (2). A wheel and multiple disc-brake assembly comprises a fixed axle 1 carrying a disc-brake structure which includes rotor discs 32 having means for coupling with, such as by means of axially extending keyways, grooves or serrations 31 provided on, the inner surface of an openended drum-like wheel 24, the wheel 24 having a bearing 15 on its open-end of sufficiently large diameter to pass axially over the brake assembly, and seat on a fixed support-member 4 thereof, and a smaller bearing 19 at its other end to engage the axle 1. As shown, the wheel comprises a rim base 24 with a detachable tyre flange 28 and an integral support disc 29, at one end, the disc 29 having ventilating apertures 48 and an inner peripheral bearing housing which receives the outer race 21 of the taper-roller bearing 13 and is braced to the base 24 by webs 30. The inner race 20 of the bearing 19 is retained on the end of an axle sleeve 3 by an axle nut 41 and washer 40. The sleeve 3, which is secured on the axle 1 by a ring of bolts 6 engaged through abutting flanges 2, 5 of the axle and sleeve, and screwed on to the brake support member 4, has a brake backing disc 7 keyed thereon adjacent the bearing 19, the backing disc being clamped against a sleeve shoulder 8 by a nut 9. Axially slidably keyed on the sleeve 3 are metal spiders 34, 35, which, together with the backing disc 7, carry rings or blocks 36, 37 of friction material interleaved with the rotor discs 32. The brake is operated by a series of pistons 44 engaging the spider 34 and operating in a series of circumferentiallyspaced hydraulic cylinders 43 formed in the support member 4. To provide for air circulation over the brake structure, the keyways 31 are formed to be radially inwardly of the undersurface of the wheel 24 and thereby leave a clearance 49. The bearing 15 at the open end of the wheel forms the outer race of a taper-roller bearing 13, the inner race of which seats on the periphery of the brake support 4.
