Abstract

Monomers having the group CH2 = C < alone or in admixture with preformed polymers, are polymerized in bulk in the presence of a catalyst mixture comprising a hydroperoxide of the formula R-O-O-H and/or an acyl-alkyl peroxide of the formula R-CO-O-O-R, in which R represents a substituted or non-substituted aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic, or heterocyclic radical, and at least one sulphinic acid, e.g. p-toluene sulphinic acid, sulphinic acid compound, or mercaptan, e.g. dodecyl mercaptan. Monomers mentioned are styrene, triallyl cyanurate, diethylene glycol bis-(allyl carbonate), acrylic acid, vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. The catalyst mixture may also contain other peroxides such as benzoyl or lauryl, one or more heavy metal salts, e.g. copper acetonyl acetate, compounds with a labile halogen atom such as triethyl or dibutyl amine hydrochloride, and monohydric or polyhydric alcohols. The preformed polymer may be an unsaturated alkyd prepared from maleic anhydride and glycol. The polymers may be used for coating, e.g. by spraying, in dentistry, or in the manufacture of moulded articles. Specification 710,535 is referred to.
