Abstract

A liquid composition, suitable as a jetturbine lubricant, comprises (1) a tetra-alkyl orthosilicate, and (2) a complex ester condensate of a monohydric alcohol, a glycol and a dicarboxylic acid. The viscosity index and viscosity at 210 DEG F. of the composition may be increased by the inclusion therein of a polyalkyl methacrylate. The composition may also include, as an oxidation inhibitor for the composition (or components thereof) in the liquid phase, an amine having at least one aromatic nucleus with two or more condensed aromatic rings (e.g. phenyl alpha naphthylamine), an alkyl phenyl amine, diphenyl amine, an alkyl phenol (preferably having at least two alkyl radicles in the 2, 4 or 6 positions to the OH radicle and at least two alkyl radicles being linked to the aromatic nucleus through a tertiary carbon atom), alpha or beta naphthol, an alkylated naphthol, phenol or naphthol containing ether or thio-ether linkages, or a polyhydric alkyl benzene or naphthalene (e.g. alkylated catechol). In order to inhibit oxidation of thermal decomposition products in the vapour phase, the liquid composition may also contain an organic selenide or telluride of formula R-(X)m-R1, wherein X is selenium or tellurium, m is an integer and R and R1 are saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic groups which may carry aromatic substituents (e.g. phenyl, hydroxyphenyl or aminophenyl groups). A list of suitable dialkyl mono- and di-selenides and tellurides is given. In the examples, liquid compositions are described consisting of (i) tetra-(2-ethyl hexyl) orthosilicate and complex ester A (derived from sebacic acid, 2-ethyl-hexanol and 2-ethyl-1,3-hexane diol) with or without phenyl alpha naphthylamine; (ii) tetra-(oxoiso-octyl) orthosilicate, complex ester A and acryloid HF-855 (polymerized n-octyl methacrylate dissolved in light petroleum oil) with or without phenyl alpha naphthylamine; and (iii) tetra-(oxo-iso-octyl) orthosilicate, complex ester A, phenyl alpha naphthylamine and dilauryl selenide with or without acryloid HF-855.
