790,277. Dental handpieces. TECHNICAL CERAMICS, Ltd. Jan. 20, 1956 [Jan. 28, 1955], No. 2000/56. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] An ultrasonic drill for dental use of the kind having an ultrasonic transducer producing vibrations in the longitudinal direction of the drill is also vibrated in at least one flexural mode. As shown, a transducer 30, which may be a piezo-electric crystal or be vibrated by magnetostriction, is attached to a drill 31 having a tip 33. The transducer may be vibrated longitudinally as shown at L and also has means for producing vibrations in one or more flexural modes F. The drill may be operated in such a manner that a small entry hole is made by the use of longitudinal vibrations only, and then, by the application of flexural vibrations the interior may be enlarged without enlarging the entry hole. The drill and tip may be hollow to allow the introduction of abrasive material or the abrasive material may be supplied from an external tube.
