789,520. Magnetic reproducing apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1955 [Dec. 22, 1954], No. 37037/54. Class 40 (2). A magnetic tape apparatus adapted for use with both a tape of a first kind carrying complementary tracks for simultaneous reproduc. tion and of a second kind carrying independent tracks for consecutive reproduction, comprises a multi-track reproducing head having a sufficient number of sections to reproduce simultaneously the separate signals from the respective tracks of a tape of the first kind, at least one separate single-track reproducing head for the reproduction of signals from at least one of the tracks of a tape of the second kind, and selective means for rendering the different heads effective. The embodiment described shows an apparatus with a tape 3 carrying twin tracks in which a double-track head 6 is employed for reproducing simultaneous signal tracks, such as in a binaural system, and separate single-track heads 7, 8 for reproducing independent signal tracks. The apparatus is preferably provided with a three-position manual control 27 coupled to electromagnetic relays 28 by means of which a switch mechanism 23 appropriately conditions the circuits of the heads 6, 7, 8, amplifiers 24 and loud-speakers 25, 26. Position A of control 27 conditions the apparatus for simultaneous reproduction, while positions B and C condition the apparatus for reproduction of the independent recordings, respectively, for the reproduction of one track or the other. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2, the control 27 controls the bringing into operation of pressure members 29, 30, 31, to bring the tape into contact with one or other of the heads 6, 7, 8 respectively.
