Abstract

789,466. Respiratory appliances. ARO EQUIPMENT CORPORATION. June 14, 1955 [Dec. 13, 1954], No. 17068/55. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A valve connected between an aviator's breathing mask and an oxygen supply bottle carried by the aviator and which automatically opens in the event of a parachute jump, comprises a valve body 10 mounted on an oxygen bottle 14 and connected by a tube 23 to a breathing mask. The body houses a normally closed, spring-loaded valve member 24 which is operably associated with a toggle comprising levers 43, 44 mounted on a pivot pin 46 and over-centre springs 52. The toggle is connected by a link 55 to a reset stem 54 held in inoperative position by a shear-pin 55b and connected by a flexible cable 62 to a quick-release mechanism A. The quick-release mechanism comprises a hook member 86 connected to the aircraft structure and a spring-loaded pin 68 secured to the member 86 by means of indents 72 in the pin, balls 76 and a collar 74. On a jump being made the cable 62 is tautened, whence the stem 54 operates the toggle to unseat the valve member 24. The pin 68 is subsequently pulled downwardly against its spring so that the balls 76 are released and the pin 68 freed from the member 86. Prior to jumping, the aviator should remove the shear pin 55b but in the event of this being overlooked it will be sheared by the stem 54 when the cable 62 is tautened. A removable cap 60 per mits re-setting of the valve in its closed position and a check valve 102 protected by a removable cap 112 allows the bottle 14 to be recharged. The oxygen from the bottle passes through a filter 34 and a ceramic pin 36 to regulate the flow.
