Abstract

Epoxide resins are prepared by reacting more than 2 mols. of epichlorhydrin or a -dichlorhydrin with 1 mol. of a dihydric phenol containing three or four phenylene groups joined in a chain by methylene groups, one phenolic hydroxyl group being attached to each terminal nucleus. In Example (1), bis-hydroxybenzyl benzene was dissolved in a mixture of epichlorhydrin and 95 per cent alcohol. Caustic soda was added gradually with continuous stirring. Alcohol and excess epichlorhydrin were distilled off and toluene and water stirred in. The separated toluene solution was concentrated in vacuum. The resulting resin cured with diethylenetriamine yielded a product with high impart strength useful for sticking aluminium to aluminium. Example (2) is similar, using 4,41 - bis - hydroxybenzyl-diphenylmethane as the dihydric phenol.
