Abstract

788,607. Pipe couplings: vacuum cleaners. CANADIAN GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 10, 1953], No. 32114/54. Classes 8(1) and 99(1). A device for coupling a suction pipe 5, Figs. 2-4, to a vacuum cleaner comprises a pivotally mounted locking plate or ring 13 having a hole 20 therein which becomes aligned with the socket 10 to permit the end of the suction pipe 5 to be fitted therein when the plate is pivoted towards the opening 10, the plate 13 being biased by a spring 17a away from the opening 10 into binding relationship with the pipe 5, preventing accidental withdrawal thereof. The top of the vacuum cleaner is provided with a rotatable housing 3 having a hand-grip 7 and forming the air inlet passage 9 leading to the socket 10. The locking plate 13 is pivoted at 14 in a recess 11 formed between spaced walls 12 and is normally biased by the spring 17a to a position in which the opening 20 is slightly out of alignment with the socket 10, the movement of the plate 13 away from the socket 10 being limited by a lip 18 engaging a stop 19. A space between the bottom of the plate 14 and the housing 3 prevents the accumulation of dirt. In a modification, Fig. 5, the locking means comprises a ring 27 supported in a recess 24 so that it pivots about its bottom edge and connected to a spring-loaded push-button 33 which after insertion of the suction pipe, pivots the ring into locking engagement with the pipe. Dirt collecting in the bottom of the recess 24 escapes through a passage 52. The device is also shown applied to the blower outlet of a vacuum cleaner and is also applicable to the coupling together of two pipes.
