Class 44 [Also in Group XXII] In making coil-type sliding clasp fasteners gaps are formed in a length of coil each loop of which is attached to a supporting strip by apparatus which severs two or more loops and disengages the portion of the coil between the severed loops or the outer severed loops from the strip. The strips are severed at the gaps to form the individual coil units for the fasteners which may be as described in Specification 548,819. A blade 15, Figs. 1 and 8, having a straight cutting edge and of width equal to the gap is reciprocated horizontally by a crank 36 to cut through one side of all the loops which are to be removed. The strip 11 is held between gripping members 17 and 18 one of which is pivoted and actuated against the action of a spring by a cam 70. After cutting one side of the loops, the blade 15 holds the other side of the loops against a spring-loaded backing member 16 and during the last part of its stroke disengages the loops from the strip 11. A stop 46 on the blade engages the backing member 16 to maintain sufficient clearance. During the return stroke the waste loops are stripped from the blade 15 by a member 23 pivotally mounted and oscillated by a cam 59. The machine is operated manually or automatically under control of a one revolution clutch. The blade may have projecting end portions so that both sides of the end loops of the gap are cut. In a modification the blade is shaped as shown in Fig. 10 and has sharpedged notches 81a which sever alternate loops and blunt-edged receses 84 which engage the intervening loops to remove a portion of the coil. The backing member is dispensed with. In a modified machine, Fig. 14, for forming gaps in two coils 92, 93 at once, two blades 95, 96 are carried by a cam reciprocated crosshead and co-operate with a spring-mounted backing member 94. The strips 90, 91 are gripped by clamps actuated by spring-loaded plungers on the crosshead and a striping member 97 between the blades is reciprocated by a cam.
