Abstract
Phthalic acids are prepared by a process which comprises oxidizing dialkyl benzenes by means of oxygen or a molecular oxygen-containing gas in a medium mainly consisting of an organic acid in which the dialkyl benzene is soluble, wherein iron ions are removed from the reaction medium or from portions thereof before commencement of the process and/or during the process so as to maintain the concentration of iron ions in the reaction medium below 100 parts per million. The process may be carried out by regularly removing a quantity of the reaction liquid from the reaction mixture, treating it for the removal of iron, e.g. by means of ion exchangers, and returning it to the system. Alternatively the reaction system may include means for removing iron through which part or all of the reaction mixture is circulated. The preferred organic acids are aliphatic carboxylic acids having 2-8 carbon atoms in the molecule. Specified dialkyl benzenes are diisopropyl benzenes. In examples: (1) p-diisopropylbenzene in solution in acetic acid is oxidized, under pressure with air and in the presence of cobalt acetate, manganese acetate, p-isopropylbenzoic acid and varying concentrations of iron ions, to give terephthalic acid and the results compared; (2) p-diisopropylbenzene is oxidized under pressure with air in acetic acid medium and in the presence of cobalt acetate and manganese acetate, in a stainless steel reactor, the gaseous products being passed to a distillation apparatus made of acid-proof stone from which the liquid bottom product is returned to the reactor, terephthalic acid is filtered off from the reaction mixture and the filtrate is passed through a cation exchange resin and returned to the reactor after the addition of fresh catalyst; (3) as in (2) but the reactor is made of acid-proof stone and the distillation apparatus of stainless steel, the liquid bottom product from the latter being passed through a cation exchanger before being returned to the reactor liquid.
