Abstract

787,840. Tyre-moulding presses. NATIONAL RUBBER MACHINERY CO. Feb. 19, 1954, No. 5027/54. Class 87(2). Relates to tyre-moulding presses of the kind having an integral diaphragm 70, Fig. 15, which is expanded to force a pulley-band tyre T against mould sections 4, 19. The invention provides a plunger 72 which, after the moulding operation, pushes the closed end of the diaphragm downwardly into a well 71 to turn it inside out and strip it from the tyre, as shown in Figs. 15 and 16, this plunger being mounted in the mould section 19 which is not the section to which the diaphragm is secured. The plunger 72 is secured to the lower end of a piston rod 72a, Fig. 2, which reciprocates with respect to a fixed piston 82. The downwardly-facing part of the plunger has a conical recess which engages a conical member 77 on the diaphragm to centre the diaphragm. The open end of the diaphragm is clamped between the upper end of the well 71 and the bead ring 6 on the lower mould section. The diaphragm is raised to the vertical position by the pressure of curing medium passing through aperture A, Fig. 3, into the hollow wall of the well and thence through passages 73a. The press head includes a tyre-stripping ring 25 secured to a tube 80 fixed to a crosshead 79 which may be raised and lowered by fluid pressure cylinders 26. The lower end of the plunger 72 may be a conical projection, as shown in Fig. 8, this projection engaging a recessed head 27 secured to the diaphragm. The normal shape of the diaphragm may be approximately tyre-shaped, as in Fig. 9. Fig. 10 shows a diaphragm having a closed end 90 reinforced with spun fibreglass, fabric or metal, and this end may have a conical or recessed part to co-operate with the plunger. Modified forms of well are described, Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown). Specification 689,148 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 755,992.
