Abstract

787,815. Motor vehicles. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Aug. 29, 1955 [Aug. 28, 1954]. No. 24733/55. Classes 79(2), 79(3) and 79(4) In a motor vehicle having the differential gear 11 and change-speed gear 10 combined as a unit separate from the engine 8, the unit is suspended from the sprung part of the vehicle so as to be rockable about a longitudinal horizontal axis by means affording resilience substantially exclusively about the axis. As shown in Fig. 1 the chassis frame comprises a central longitudinal tubular member 1 supporting the vehicle body 3 on transverse members 4 and at 2, a shorter transverse member 6 supporting seats 7. The front end of the member 1 supports the engine 8 connected to wheels 15 by a cardan shaft 9, the change speed gear 10 and differential gear 11, and axles, the unit formed by the gears 10, 11 having arms 12. The arms 12 are pivotally mounted on the member 1 and resilient sleeves 13 are interposed. A transverse frame member 14 is provided against which suspension springs for the wheels 15 abut. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a central longitudinal tubular member 17 supports another tubular member 19 by means of a bracket 18. Pivotally and resiliently mounted on the member 19 are arms 20 supporting the gears 10, 11, one arm 20 being apertured at 22 to receive the shaft 9 interconnecting the engine 8 carried by the member 19 and gears accommodated in the other arm 20. In a further embodiment. Fig. 5, the engine 8 and the change-speed gear 10 are arranged at opposite ends of the differential gear 11, and the arms 21 supporting the gears 10, 11 are apertured at 22 to receive the cardan shaft 9.
