Abstract

A polyester, in the form of a viscous liquid, is the reaction product of (a) a straight chain dibasic acid having two to eight carbon atoms and up to two ether oxygen atoms between the carboxyl groups; (b) a polyethylene glycol of formula HO(CH2CH2O)nH, where n is greater than 1; and (3) an aliphatic polyhydroxy compound containing more than two hydroxyl groups and in an amount between 0.03 and 0.2 mol. per mol. of glycol. Preferably the hydroxyl number of the polyester is up to 200 (preferably 30-90) and the acid number is up to 50 (preferably 0-10). The resin may be made by heating the reactants (a), (b) and (c) at 200-250 DEG C. first at atmospheric pressure and then under vacuum or by heating the hydroxylic components with an aliphatic ester of the dibasic acid. The polyesters may be cross-linked by heating with a dibasic acid or by reacting at room temperature with a dialdehyde, a divinyl ether, a bifunctional unsaturated carbonyl compound, a bis-epoxide or a polyisocyanate. Examples disclose polyesters obtained by reacting (1)-(3) adipic acid, diethylene glycol and pentaerythritol, trimethylol propane or sorbitol. (4) Sebacic acid, triethylene glycol and pentaerythritol. (5) Succinic anhydride, diethylene glycol and pentaerythritol. (6) Azelaic acid, polyethylene glycol (M.W. 400) and pentaerythritol. (7) Succinic anhydride, triethylene glycol and triethanolamine. (8) Adipic acid, triethylene glycol and pentaerythritol. (9) Diglycolic acid, triethylene glycol and pentaerythritol. (10) Glutaric acid, diethylene glycol and pentaerythritol. (11) Ethylene bis (glycolic acid) diethylene glycol and trimethylolethane. (12)-(14) Adipic acid, diethylene glycol and trimethylol ethane, glycerol or a polyol having the formula: <FORM:0787760/IV (a)/1> (15) Dimethyl adipate, diethylene glycol and glycerol in presence of lead monoxide as catalyst. In addition to the acids mentioned a mixture of acids may be used (e.g. adipic and diglycolic or adipic and sebacic). The resins are compatible with polyvinyl alcohol.
