Abstract

787,330. Wringer mops. PHILLIPS TELESCOPIC TAPS, Ltd. June 29, 1955 [July 15, 1954], No. 20649/54. Class 19. A wringer mop comprises a sponge 10 supported on two backing members 9, each of which is mounted on a separate hinge member 6 for folding to squeeze the sponge, pressure members 15 being pivoted on the hinge members coaxially with the backing members. The mop handle 2 is held by a split socket 3 provided in a centre fitting 1, which includes side cheeks 4 bent and joined together to form a rectangular end. On the outer corners hinge sockets 5 are formed to receive the hinge members 6, each of which comprises a length of wire bent into rectangular shape. The sides of the members 6 are of L-shape to pass behind the wooden backing members 9, each of which is attached to a separate metal plate 11 by means of a pin and wing nut 12. The outer ends of the plates 11 are bent up to form hinge sockets receiving the in-turned ends of the hinge members 6 ; each backing member 9 is free to pivot on the outer end of the corresponding hinge member 6, outward movement being limited by side flanges 14 formed on the plates 11. The ends 15a of a pair of pressure links 15 are bent to engage in slots in the plates 11, so being pivoted coaxially with the hinge members 6. Each pressure link 15 is pivoted to one arm of a V- shaped link 16 which itself pivots in a socket 18 formed in a slide 19 mounted on the handle of the mop. Tails on the plates 11 engage the centre fitting 1 to support the plates when in mopping position. The Provisional Specification refers to alternative constructions, in one of which the metal plates 11 are omitted, being replaced by suitably formed extended portions of the wire hinge-members 6. In this case the pressure members 15 are formed from sheet metal and have a curled socket at one end for pivoting to the hinge members. In another construction, the wire hinge-members 6 are replaced by L-shaped plates, a blade spring being fixed at one end to the underside of each plate, at its outer end, while the inner end of the spring bears on the backing member, being fixed to it by means of a pin and wing-nut. In a further modification, the handle is fixed to one of the backing members. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 744,251 and 697,400.
