Abstract
Gasoline is reformed in the presence of hydrogen using a catalyst prepared by impregnating a porous gamma-type alumina base with silicon tetrafluoride or fluosilicic acid and then mixing with an aqueous solution of a platinum compound, drying, and converting the platinum compound to metallic platinum. Alternatively, silica, fluorine, and platinum may be incorporated simultaneously in the catalyst by impregnating the alumina base with an aqueous solution containing fluosilicic acid and chloroplatinic acid. The final catalyst contains by weight 0.03-3 per cent silica, 0.1-8 per cent fluorine, and at least 0.1 (preferably 0.1-2) per cent platinum (see Group III). Suitable reforming conditions are a temperature of 600-1000 DEG F., a pressure of 50-1000 p.s.i., a liquid hourly space velocity of 0.5-10, and a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of 0.5-15. The catalysts are tested by passing a mixture of methylcyclopentane and hydrogen over the catalyst and measuring the yield of benzene. In Example III an East Texas low octane naphtha is converted to a high octane reformate. Specification 657,565 is referred to.ALSO:A gasoline reforming catalyst is prepared by impregnating a porous gamma-type alumina base with silicon tetrafluoride or fluosilicic acid and then mixing with an aqueous solution of a platinum compound, drying, and converting the platinum compound to metallic platinum. Suitable platinum compounds are chloroplatinic acid and platinic chloride. Alternatively silica, fluorine and platinum may be incorporated simultaneously by impregnating the alumina base with an aqueous solution containing fluosilicic acid and chloroplatinic acid. The final catalyst contains by weight 0.03-3 per cent silica, 0.1-8 per cent fluorine, and at least 0.1 (preferably 0.1-2) per cent platinum. Gamma-type alumina includes gamma, chi, eta and delta alumina. The alumina base may be prepared (a) by adding alkali or ammonia to an aluminium salt solution; (b) by acidification of a soluble aluminate; (c) by reaction of water and amalgamated aluminium in the presence of a weak organic acid as peptizing agent; or (d) by hydrolysis of aluminium alcoholates. Conversion of the platinum compound to platinum may be effected by calcining in air at 700-1000 DEG F. or by reduction in hydrogen at 250-750 DEG F. Specification 657,565 is referred to.
