Abstract

Hydrocarbon fractions boiling within the motor fuel range are hydroformed in the presence of a catalyst prepared by mixing a compound of platinum or palladium with alumina hydrosol, drying the product, and activating with hydrogen; a halogen compound, e.g. hydrogen fluoride, and also silica, chromia, or zirconia may be included in the catalyst (see Group III). Hydroforming is carried out at 600-1000 DEG F. at pressures of up to 1000 lb. per square inch (preferably 50-250 lb. per square inch), at feed rates of 0.25-4 V/V/hour, and in the presence of 2000-12,000 cubic feet of hydrogen-rich gas per barrel of liquid hydrocarbon.ALSO:Platinum - alumina and palladium - alumina catalysts for hydrocarbon conversion are prepared by mixing a compound of platinum or palladium with alumina hydrosol, drying the product, and activating with hydrogen. The alumina hydrosol, which preferably contains 1-6 per cent. of alumina, may be prepared by treating aluminium metal with a dilute acid, e.g. acetic acid, in the presence of mercury or a mercury compound or by hydrolysis of an aluminium alkoxide, preferably derived from a water-insoluble alcohol; in the latter method the alkoxide dissolved in alcohol or a hydrocarbon is treated with glacial acetic acid as a peptizing agent, and then mixed with water at 150-200 DEG F. To prepare the catalyst, the sol is mixed with a solution of chloroplatinic acid, ammonium choroplatinate, or palladium chloride, and the mixture may be treated with hydrogen sulphide; alternatively the platinum or palladium solution may be treated with hydrogen sulphide before mixing with the sol. Halogen compounds, e.g. hydrogen fluoride, hydrochloric acid, ammonium fluoride, or aluminium chloride, may be added to the platinum or palladium solution or to the platinum- or palladium-containing sol. or the gel product may be treated with gaseous or aqueous halogen acid. Drying is carried out at 200 DEG -400 DEG F. and activation with hydrogen at 500 DEG -1000 DEG F. The final catalyst preferably contains (by weight) 0.2-1 per cent. platinum or 0.5-3 per cent. palladium and 0.1-4 per cent. halogen. From 1-10 per cent. of silica, chromia, or zirconia may be included to improve the stability. One of the examples mentions the addition of formaldehyde as a preservative. The catalysts are useful in hydroforming hydrocarbons (see Group IV (b)).
