Abstract

787,237. Stereoscopic photography. ROGERS, G. L. March 24, 1954 [April 30, 1953], No. 10134/55. Divided out of 787,235. Classes 97(1) and 98(2) A stereoscopic camera assembly comprises a photographic camera and an optical field subdividing system having an array of three or more light refracting or light reflecting members arranged so that the camera records separate juxtaposed images corresponding to views from slightly different directions determined by the positions of the members. As shown in Fig. 3 the field of the camera 2 is subdivided by concave lenses 1 with which may be associated a condensing lens 3. In Fig. 4 the light for forming the image corresponding to each viewpoint is reflected into the camera by reflection first from one of the mirrors 5 and then from one of the mirrors 4. The mirrors 5 are spaced to provide the necessary viewpoints and the mirrors 4, which are actually equal in number to the mirrors 5, are grouped so that the images are fitted into the format of the film in the camera. Instead of mirrors, prisms 10, 12, Fig. 11, may be used and may be associated with Galilean systems of lenses 11, 13. Polarizing filters may be associated with the separate systems, adjacent filters having planes of polarization at right angles, the corresponding areas of film in the camera being covered with similarly oriented filters. To increase the effective number of viewpoints the optical elements receiving light from the object may be reciprocated, together, in their own plane, their co-operation with the system which directs light into the camera being maintained by a rotating optical block. The effective number of view points may also be increased by recording each of the separate images on lenticular film. For this purpose horizontally lenticulated film may be used as described in Specifications 410,515, 541,751, 541,752 and 541,753. In another embodiment separate television cameras are disposed at the required viewpoints and the images recorded by them are displayed in juxtaposition and photographed. The records obtained in the camera system of the invention are intended for projection in superposition on a lenticular screen by an optical system, generally similar to that used for photographing, but with the light paths reversed. The exposures for the separate images may be simultaneous or may be effected successively by separate shutters associated with the separate optical systems or by a roller blind shutter in the camera. By using successive exposures with a moving subject an illusion of movement may be introduced into an otherwise still photograph or different exposures may be made of separate subjects to produce a composite photograph.
