Abstract

787,109. Filters: gravity-separation apparatus. BARNES DRILL CO. Feb. 3, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1955], No. 3481/56. Class 46. [Also in Groups XXIV and XXX] Liquid, e.g. machine-tool coolant, is discharged at 14, Fig. 1, into a receptacle 53 forming the lower end of a shoot 54 up which coarse chips are conveyed by scrapers 65, Figs. 1 and 2, secured to chains 66 which are moved by sprockets 67 fixed to a rotating shaft 28. Liquid with finer solids passes sideways through semicircular openings 63 in the sides of the receptacle 53, each covered by a circular screen 51 secured to the shaft 28, into a pocket formed by two imperforate discs 27, loose on the shaft 28, and by part of an intermittently-travelling sheet of paper or the like 12. Filtrate gravitating through the sheet 12 is collected in a tank 15. The paper 12 is held against the discs 27 and moved, together with the discs, when necessary, by an endless conveyer 20 comprising transverse parallel wire slats 21, Fig. 2, each joined by endloops 22 to an adjacent slat and engaging notches 29, Fig. 1, in two driving sprockets 25. When the level of the pool of liquid 11, Fig. 1, rises above a predetermined point a float 44, Fig. 2, closes a switch 48 by means of a cam 47, whereby, a ring magnet 38, Fig. 6 (fixed to the wall 17 of the tank 15), is energized. The energized magnet grips a ring gear 37 (otherwise loose on the rotating shaft 28) so that the motion of a sun gear 35 secured to the shaft is transmitted to a planet-carrier 39 which is in the form of a sprocket loose on the shaft 28. The sprocket 39 drives, through a chain 40 and other gearing, the conveyer-driving sprockets 25 so that a clean portion of paper 12 is moved along to form the bottom of the pool 11, whereupon the liquid level falls and the magnet 38 is deenergized. The used sheet is collected at 32. Each circular screen 51 is continuously cleaned by a back flow of compressed air supplied at 75 to a tube 74, Fig. 2, communicating with a radial slot 73, Fig. 1, in the side wall of the shoot 54.
