Abstract

787,088. Packaging-machines. ST. REGIS PAPER CO. June 14, 1955 [July 7, 1954; Nov. 30, 1954], No. 17152/55. , Class 94(1). [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for jigging and conveying filled bags comprises in one form, Figs. 1 and 3, a base plate 21 which is mounted on leaf springs 21a and 21b and coupled by a rod 100 to an eccentric 21c driven by an electric motor 97. Side guide plates 105, 106, e.g., of plywood, are secured to rods 109 extending from brackets 22a which are attached to the side flanges 107 of the base plate. The rods are adjustable in sockets 108 and are secured by set screws 115. Each bag is suspended between the plates 105, 106 from a filling spout whose centre line is indicated at 117 and the motor 97 is energized to cause the plate 21 to oscillate in such manner that a point 118 thereon is moved in an arcuate path Oa. The vertical and horizontal components Ob and Oc of this motion cause the plates 105 and 106 to vibrate in sympathy about horizontal and vertical axes 122 and 120 whereby the plates operate on the bag with a slapping action to settle its contents during the filling operation. When the latter has been completed, the bag is released from the spout and falls on to the plate 21. The oscillatory motion of the latter moves the bag to the left on to a belt 119 which conveys it to sewing mechanism, the plates 105, 106 continuing to operate to consolidate its contents and shape it to a substantially square cross-section. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, side plates 22, 23 corresponding to the plates 105, 106 are tilted towards each other and are extended along either side of the belt 25 which conveys the bags through the sewing mechanism 28, their forward ends being supported by rubber members 50, 51. The mouth of each bag is engaged by inclined feed dogs 26a which urge it against a levelling guide 29 of inverted channel cross-section and is embraced by a closure tape 27 which is fed through a guide 48. Operation of the mechanism 28 is controlled by a micro-switch 42 operated by an arm 43 which is engaged by the bag. The plates 105, 106 or 22, 23 may be mounted on the frame of the apparatus and actuated by separate vibrators. Belgian Specification 539,616 and French Specification 1,134,056 are referred to.
