Abstract
Siloxanes and silanes of the unit general formula <FORM:0787046/IV (a)/1> Y is chlorine or bromine, a is an integer from 1 to 5 inclusive, b is 0 or 1, c is an integer from 1 to 5 inclusive and the sum of b+c is not greater than 5, n is 1 or 2, m is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated aryl hydrocarbon radical, may be made by reacting alkali metal salts of halophenols with halomethylsiloxanes or halomethylsilanes having 1 or 2 halomethyl groups per Si atom, or by reacting alkali metal salts of the above phenols with a siloxane in which only some of the Si atoms have halomethyl groups attached thereto. Reactants specified are (a) alkali metal salts of pentachlorophenol, 2 - chloroxenol, heptachloroxenols, 2.4.5.6 - tetrachlorophenol, 2.4.5-trichlorophenol, tribromophenols, parachlorophenol, 2.4.6 - trichloro - 3.5 - dibromophenol and dichloroxenols, and (b) halomethyl siloxanes and silanes containing as silicon-bonded organic radicals, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloaliphatic, alkaryl, aryl or halogenated aryl radicals. The reaction is preferably effected in solvents, e.g. dimethylformamide, pyridine, ethers, hydrocarbons and acetonitrile and at the reflux temperature of the solvent. The novel siloxanes may be copolymerized in known manner with siloxanes of the general formula <FORM:0787046/IV (a)/2> where R1 is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical. The siloxanes and silanes are useful as lubricants and as additives for lubricants. In examples, the preparations of (1) <FORM:0787046/IV (a)/3> (2) a copolymer of the siloxane of (1) with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, (3) tribromophenoxymethylheptamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, (4) a copolymer of dichloroxenoxymethyl-, phenylmethyl- and vinyldimethyl-siloxanes, (5) a copolymer of p-chlorophenoxymethyldimethyl-, dimethyl- and chlorophenylmethylsiloxanes, (6) <FORM:0787046/IV (a)/4> and (7) pentachlorophenoxymethylchlorophenyloctadecylallylsilane are described.
