Abstract

Iridescent flake, which may be dispersed throughout a carrier body composed of light transmissive plastic material to form e.g. umbrella handles, spectacle frames, beads for necklaces &c., comprises a plastic layer at least one of which carries a minimum of two metallic (defined to include metallic compound) films separated by a layer of light transmissive plastic material, arranged so that one surface of the flake is formed by a light transmissive metallic film overlying a light transmissive plastic layer or vice versa. Three examples of the production of flake are disclosed in which (1) a cellulose acetate or nitrate layer is rubbed on both sides with a cloth dusted with bismuth oxychloride (or oxyiodide) so as to deposit a transparent film of the compound, is then coated on both sides with nitrocellulose (or with styrene polymer in the case of oxyiodide) and is finally provided with a further film of bismuth compound, (2) a film of aluminium is deposited by vacuum deposition on to a regenerated cellulose layer, is then coated with methyl methacrylate, and finally with bismuth compound as in (1), and (3) a film of gold is deposited by vacuum deposition on to a polyvinyl alcohol layer, is then coated with ethyl cellulose, and finally with bismuth compound as in (1). Two examples are disclosed of the incorporation of flake into carrier bodies composed of allyl polyester resin and unsaturated polyester in styrene. Many examples are given of thermosetting and thermoplastic resins which may be used to form the flake and the carrier body.
