Abstract
The invention comprises the ethyl ester of chromonyl - 3 - (41 - hydroxycoumarinyl - 31)-acetic acid, its water-soluble alkali metal and ammonium salts, and a method for the preparation of esters of chromonyl-3-(41-hydroxycoumarinyl-31)-acetic acid (and also the sodium salt thereof) by cyclizing the appropriate ester of a - (4 - hydroxycoumarinyl - 3) - b - salicyloylpropionic acid with an alkyl formate and metallic sodium followed by acidification, if desired, of the sodium salt obtained. In an example: a - (41 - hydroxycoumarinyl - 31) - b - salicyloyl-propionic acid ethyl ester in cooled ethyl formate is treated with powdered sodium and the resulting sodium salt dissolved in water and acidified yielding ethyl chromonyl-3-(41-hydroxycoumarinyl-31)-acetate. Other esters mentioned are methyl, propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl and benzyl.ALSO:Raticidal compositions comprise an ester of chromonyl - 3 - (41 - hydroxycoumarinyl - 31) - acetic acid or a water-soluble alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof together with an edilbe bait. Specified esters are methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl and benzyl.
