Abstract
786,012. Boring earth. TRAVAUX SOUTERRAINS. Feb. 16, 1956 [Feb. 18. 1955], No. 4861/56. Class 85 [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] In apparatus for laying pipes or cables underground by displacing earth under pressure by successively and independently advancing a penetrating head 7 and a body 5 slidably carrying the head, the head and body are advanced by a rod 4 reciprocated by driving means housed in the body. A pit is dug, the head is placed in a short passage formed transversly to the pit, and wedges are placed between the end 5a of the body and the wall of the pit opposite the passage, the body rod and head being in the positions shown in Fig. 13. Fluid pressure is applied to the right hand side of a piston 3 fixed to the rod to move the rod and head to the position shown in Fig. 15. Wedges are placed between the end 4a of the rod and the wall, and fluid pressure is applied to the left hand side of the piston to advance the body into the head so that the body and head are in the relative positions shown in Fig. 13. One end of a pipe section is fixed to the end 5a of the body, wedges are placed between the other end of the pipe section and the wall, and fluid pressure is again applied to the right hand side of the piston to advance the head. At the end of the advance of the head one end of a rod section is attached to the end 4a of the rod, wedges are placed between the other end of a rod section and the wall, and fluid pressure is applied to the left hand side of the piston to advance the body. The procedure of adding rod and pipe sections between reciprocations of the piston is continued until the desired length of pipe is laid. The rod 4, piston 3 and cylinder 1 may be withdrawn through the pipe after unlatching the cylinder from the body 5 by rearward movement of the rod. The pressure fluid is supplied by a passage within the rod and a pin 54 reciprocated by contact with the ends of the cylinder actuates valve-gear directing the fluid to the relevant side of the piston (see Group XXVI).
